I am pleased that you are interested in my book on “How to play the Piano by Ear”. I hope you enjoy playing the piano as much as I do. I have reached a point where I almost forget if I am playing by ear now or if I am reading music.
As I was growing up I took private piano lessons from grade one through grade twelve. I was taught how to read music quite well, but I was never told that there was any another way to play the piano. As an adult when I would go to someone’s home or church they would ask me to play the piano and I would politely say, “Do you have any music?” They would say, “No, but can’t you play something anyway?” They couldn’t understand that I only read music. Here in the mountains of Kentucky the people usually learn how to play music by ear or not at all because there are not many professional teachers.
Well, I became very upset when I would see people sit down and play a song without any music. I knew that if I could just get someone to show me what he or she was doing, I could learn too. The problem is that no one could tell me what he or she was doing. They would say, “I don’t really know what I am doing, I just play what comes naturally.” From that point on I decided that I was going to learn how to play by ear one way or another. So every time I went to a country church or visited in someone’s home, I would sit right next to the piano and watch the piano player’s hands. Well, because of my knowledge of music I could see right away that basically they were all doing the same thing. Some, of course, were doing it better than others were but basically it was the same. So I began to teach myself how to play. As I got better at this, people began asking me to tell them what I was doing and that’s when I developed the method of “How to Play the Piano by Ear”.
I am very pleased to report that I have at least a dozen students that after one lesson they went to their church and played the following Sunday for congregational singing. This book is accompanied by a video of me playing by ear. I was afraid to just sell the book without a video because I really think that in order to make sense of it all you need to hear and see me doing this process. I will sell the book without the DVD but I don’t recommend it.
“Evangelistic Style” is the style of piano playing that I have been doing since I was a young child. If you can read music, but not very well, then this is the style for you. If you are a beginner I would suggest that you purchase my “Easy Piano Mountain Hymn” Books and go through those books before starting into this book. You will get comfortable with the chord patterns in the beginner book and then my “Evangelistic Style” just reinforces those chords. Also if you have purchased my “How to Play the Piano by Ear” book and video then this would be a book that would interest you. Not only can you read music in this book, but I put the chords and rhythms on each song so that you can play them by ear too
If you liked my “Vol. 1 Evangelistic Style Mountain Hymns” you are going to love Vol. 2. “Evangelistic Style” is the style of piano playing that I have been doing since I was a young child. If you can read music, but not very well, then this is the style for you. If you are a beginner I would suggest that you purchase my “Easy Piano Mountain Hymn” books and go through those books before starting into this book unless you are strictly wanting to play by ear then you can bypass the Easy Piano books and go right into these books. Remember, if you are wanting to play by ear you would want to get my “How to play the piano by ear” booklet and video first so you can understand all there is to know about this style. This book has few more interesting chords than Vol. 1 so it should be a challenge.

I am thrilled that you are interested in my Easy Piano Mountain HymnBook (Vol. 1). I hope you are interested enough to buy all of my books.
Let me tell you how this book came about. Many years ago a local pastor came to me and asked the question, “How long will it take you to turn Melody into our church pianist?” Well, Melody was a little girl and had only been taking piano lessons a few months so it was a challenge. At that time I didn’t know how to play by ear so I had to come up with something quick. I found that most beginner hymnbooks don’t sound very advanced plus they have songs in them that the people here in the mountains have never heard. So I wrote a book of hymns that everyone around here knows and after only 2 months, Melody was ready to take over the position as pianist. Because of these songs and how easy they are to play, a lot of local churches have pianists now.
The plan is simple. All you do is play only one note at a time in the right hand and only three different chords in the left hand. I have the songs written in only three different keys: C, G, or F.
I hope you will try my book and then every book after.
Well, I am doubly thrilled that you have looked even farther into my website. Easy Piano Mountain Hymn Vol. 2 was actually written for a little girl named Trisha. Trisha’s dad became the pastor of a local church that didn’t have a piano player. So I had told her about my Vol. 1 but she needed even more songs than I had in that book so every week she would bring me a list of songs that her church wanted to sing. This is how Vol. 2 came into being. Remember Trisha is just a little girl but I will admit that her brother who was only 4 years old when he started taking lessons could also play these songs at his young age. So I feel that anyone should be able to play from this book.
Once again, the plan is simple. Your right plays only one note at a time and your left hand plays three different chords. To keep it simple I kept all songs in either the key of C, G, or F.
I hope you will decide to buy this book, I believe you will enjoy it.

I am once again thrilled that you are interested in my books. The Christmas Carol book actually came along because my students kept asking for Christmas Carols. What am I to do! Of course, I try to please my students. So I started writing some more songs. Christmas Carols are a little harder to make easy because so many Christmas Carols are written in Minor Chords, but I came up with as many as I could. So I hope you enjoy them.

I will try to keep writing more books so keep on looking through my site. I have an Easy Piano Classical started. Hopefully I will finish it soon.
