Comes with a booklet and DVD

I am pleased that you are interested in my book on “How to play the Piano by Ear”. I hope you enjoy playing the piano as much as I do. I have reached a point where I almost forget if I am playing by ear now or if I am reading music.
As I was growing up I took private piano lessons from grade one through grade twelve. I was taught how to read music quite well, but I was never told that there was any another way to play the piano. As an adult when I would go to someone’s home or church they would ask me to play the piano and I would politely say, “Do you have any music?” They would say, “No, but can’t you play something anyway?” They couldn’t understand that I only read music. Here in the mountains of Kentucky the people usually learn how to play music by ear or not at all because there are not many professional teachers.
Well, I became very upset when I would see people sit down and play a song without any music. I knew that if I could just get someone to show me what he or she was doing, I could learn too. The problem is that no one could tell me what he or she was doing. They would say, “I don’t really know what I am doing, I just play what comes naturally.” From that point on I decided that I was going to learn how to play by ear one way or another. So every time I went to a country church or visited in someone’s home, I would sit right next to the piano and watch the piano player’s hands. Well, because of my knowledge of music I could see right away that basically they were all doing the same thing. Some, of course, were doing it better than others were but basically it was the same. So I began to teach myself how to play. As I got better at this, people began asking me to tell them what I was doing and that’s when I developed the method of “How to Play the Piano by Ear”.
I am very pleased to report that I have at least a dozen students that after one lesson they went to their church and played the following Sunday for congregational singing.

This book is accompanied by a video of me playing by ear. I was afraid to just sell the book without a video because I really think that in order to make sense of it all you need to hear and see me doing this process. I will sell the book without the DVD but I don’t recommend it.
